James Connolly was executed this day 96 years ago in Kilmainham Gaol Stonebreakers yard, strapped to a chair too injured to stand to face his firing squad. His was the final execution of the 1916 leaders in Ireland, the reaction to their executions arguably changed the path of Irish History hurdling us towards a War of Independence, and Civil War and to the Republic we have today.
